One way to make sure your gutter doesn t fall off the house is to install fascia hanger brackets.

A fascia bracket will be fixed to the angled section of a rise and fall bracket using bolts and nuts to finish the installation of your gutter system. A fascia board is technically part of the roof system of your house but from the ground it looks like part of the wall. Its purpose is to cover the ends of the roof rafters and because that s where water drains off the roof the gutters are often attached to it. Set the angle of a miter saw to 45 degrees so you can make clean cuts through the board.

Lay the gutter into the brackets that you ve lag screwed to the fascia. A home without fascia needs to have gutters attached by roof straps. They re fitted to the gutter hanger and then they are attached directly to the roof. Gutters should be attached to the fascia and run the entire length of the roof ending with a downspout.

Drill 2 inch deep 1 8 inch diameter pilot holes through the fascia and rafter tails where your marks meet the chalk line. Most property owners without a fascia board assume that their building s contractors must have had other provisions for averting water damage to their foundation and walls. Be sure to use the screws recommended by the manufacturer. These straps act as a sling for your gutter.

Secure the brackets with 2 inch long 1 4 inch lag screws. Leave the old spikes in place a spike head looks better than a hole in the gutter. Rotate the gutter upward until its back edge slips into the hooks at the top of the back of the brackets as shown. Sometimes the roof needs repair in addition to the gutters but you aren t able to complete both projects at the same time.
